It was that same impulsive warmth — part rebellion, part compassion — that made Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, as she became, but known to all as Sister Stan, one of the most remarkable voices for social reform in modern Ireland...

She stood with the poor, the excluded and the newly arrived, and she did so not from behind an institution but amid the hands-on, raw reality of urban need. What made her unusual among Irish nuns was that she was also a critic — sometimes a very sharp one — of her own church...

In Kilkenny, where she worked for nearly two decades before moving to Dublin, she urged the church to “identify more with the poor”. Later, she wrote a paper suggesting that the church’s unused property should be devoted to the homeless; it “caused all hell to break loose”, as she put it. The paper was sent to Rome and she was formally silenced by the Vatican for a time, a rebuke that did nothing to dampen her independence.
